Synthesis of Intervention
Instruction and teaching that enables motivation to read includes student choice, control, and collaboration, as well as, incorporates hands-on activities and opportunities to engage in reading for authentic purposes. Strategy instruction, such as reciprocal teaching, teaches students comprehension routines that include developing a repertoire of strategies of from which students can employ during their independent reading and lead to increased understanding of a text.
The model for teaching comprehension strategies should follow a gradual release of responsibility framework with an explicit description of when and how to use the strategy, modeling and collaborative used of the strategy in action, and multiple opportunities for guided and independent practice. In this model the responsibility for the use of a strategy gradually transfers from the teacher to the student.
